What Sustainable Winemaking Means to Loveblock

A sustainable approach to winemaking just comes natural to Loveblock. It begins on our wine farms and finishes in the bottle – a wine that not only tastes good, but we’ve also done the right thing by our environment.

Sustainability and Organic Winemaking Go Hand in Hand

Our focus on organic grape growing and winemaking wouldn’t be complete without consideration to sustainability. In fact the organic philosophy is all about leaving the land in a better place than when we started, removing chemicals and additives throughout the process, reducing omissions from production and transport, while providing a better tasting wine true to its terroir and honest to the grapes.

It’s never a compromise on taste – ultimately you should feel good about what’s in your glass.

Embracing environmental and social responsive techniques and incorporating them into Loveblock winemaking ensures the health of our land, community, and wine industry for future generations.

What is Sustainable Winegrowing?

Sustainable winegrowing is a combination of environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable processes. Our goal is to grow grapes without harming the environment or the health of our staff, families or communities. It also endeavours to maintaining economic viability for our growers and vintners while producing high quality wines. The benefits of sustainable winegrowing are many – it helps protect our environment, creates jobs, improves social equity, and is profitable for everyone involved!

Our Wine Sustainability Improvements is a Never-Ending Cause

Sustainability as a process is with us for ever. Of course, it makes good environmental sense, but it also makes great business sense.

It’s not a one-off project that can be ticked off the list; it requires ongoing never-ending attention through incremental continual improvements in our processes, materials and thinking. Here’s a few examples:

Soil Health

Healthy soil is essential for healthy vines. Cover crops are planted between vine rows at Loveblock to provide nutrients, manage vine growth, attract beneficial insects, and avoid erosion. To build organic matter in the soil, we also utilise compost, which includes grape pomace reclaimed from the winery. Compost offers a healthy environment in which nutrients may be held and maintained in the soil, as well as water may be absorbed and held.

Use of Animals

If you see a chicken in a Loveblock vineyard, it’s probably not because it’s escaped the coop! We use chickens to control weeds and unwanted insects. As farmers we also use sheep and cattle to naturally control weeds.

Light-weight bottles

Presentation of our wine has always been an important aspect of our marketing. For a while we held the belief that our premium wine needed to be in a premium bottle which historically meant a thicker heavy more resource consuming bottle – these bottle of course added substantial weight to shipping.

Well, we got over ourselves and realised the benefits of a lightweight bottle are absolutely right for our sustainability drive through all aspects of our business. Lightweight bottles are minimising our environmental impact, by reducing glass use and improving transport efficiencies while still delivering a premium look and feel.
