We bought a bare paddock and after some earth works the land lay dormant for three years.<\/p><p>The Hillside is ideal for three reasons:<\/p><ol><li>\u00a0The northerly aspect laying itself bare to the radiation of the sun.<\/li><li>\u00a0A regular wind pattern that naturally controls the bug population and keeps disease at bay.<\/li><li>The soil type here is consistent over the plot and it assists with even ripening of the fruit (unlike the glacial soil in the valley).<\/li><\/ol><p>The soil has high levels of clay providing greater moisture retention which is essential in the harsh natural environment of this vineyard.\u00a0<\/p><p>So the overall terroir (pronounced teuh waa \u2013 the characteristic taste and flavour imparted to a wine by the environment in which it is produced) is perfect for growing premium aromatic white varietals.\u00a0<\/p><p>Due to the strong winds, the vine growth is slow and we tend to get very small berries producing intense aromatic concentration in the wine.<\/p><p>On the main Hillside Farm vineyard area we\u2019ll grow predominantly Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris vines.<\/p><p>But here we also love to experiment with intriguing varietals likes Pinot Blanc, Tempranillo, Gewurztraminer, Chenin Blanc and of course, Riesling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f325297 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f325297\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-695b4e1 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"695b4e1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f27befb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f27befb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Woolshed Lot \u2013 for Renowned Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-786861c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"786861c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Woolshed Lot at Loveblock sits at the bottom of the hill, tucked in next to the old manor house.\u00a0<\/p><p>We\u2019ve planted 27 acres of Sauvignon Blanc vines and 4 acres of Pinot Gris here.\u00a0<\/p><p>The soil is typical of \u201cvalleys\u201d i.e. silt over stone, alluvial free-draining. It was planted in 2003 and the conversion to organics was completed in 2012.\u00a0<\/p><p>Marlborough is recognised as one of the premium wine regions of the world. Of course the reason is its unique terroir, lending unique characteristics to the wine we grow here.<\/p><p>\u00a0At Eros, the dry soils suit deep rooting aromatic varietals \u2013 here, among others, we grow some Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.<\/p><p>We converted the Eros farm to our way of organic growing and have now crafted a sustainable vineyard.
